The IMAT Date has finally been announced! 

IMAT 2024 Date: September 17th 2024

The IMAT will officially be conducted on the 17th of September 2024 as confirmed by MUR. This will be on a Tuesday. You can read the announcement here https://www.mur.gov.it/it/news/martedi-25062024/universita-settembre-le-prove-di-selezione-medicina-lingua-inglese

This is a month earlier than last year (which was in October) and is more in line with what was the usual date when Cambridge managed the IMAT. 

Some of you may be shocked that it is one month earlier than last year. Previously we warned everyone that the test could be earlier than last year, and to thus study accordingly. September is when the IMAT has been held in most other years, and thus last year was more of an exception to the rule. 

You have just under 3 months of preparation, so even if you were expecting the test in October, do not worry. You can still do this!

IMAT 2024 Test Registration

You need to register for the test and we recommend doing this as early as possible, especially if you are taking the test outside of Italy. Places can fill up! Usually, you have 2 weeks to sign up, but you are advised to do it much earlier. 

When can you book the test? As of yet, it is not announced… but stay vigilant. It will likely be soon.

IMAT 2024 Specifications

Many of you are probably wondering about the IMAT syllabus 2024. It has yet to be announced, but it is very likely it will be the same as 2023. Stay tuned for more updates

Regarding the test format, we can assume with almost certainty it will be the same as previous years. That is…

  • 60 questions
  • 100 minutes to complete the exam
  • +1.5 marks for a correct answer
  • -0.4 marks for an incorrect answer
  • 0 marks for no answer

We will of course need to wait for the official announcement before we can say anything for sure, but there is currently no indication this would change. 

What Should I Do Now?

Right now registrations are not yet open, so you need to await the registration date before you can book the exam. Now that you have the date, however, you should start planning your trip to Italy or the other country that you intend to take the IMAT in. You should make the necessary visa arrangements if required. 

It is also time to start intensifying your study. It may feel like you have plenty of time, but it will go very quickly. The IMAT syllabus is heavy and competition gets more intense every year. Do not leave it to the last few weeks!

      1. Hello.
        I want to apply for the medicine course in English in Bologna next year, but I live in Brazil. Here, the school year begins 6 months before the European, which means that when the IMAT starts, I will not have had finished the high school year (I’ll be on the last grade) neither will have my scholars documents translated yet. Can I do the IMAT even still on high school and without my documents translated? P.S: I’ll finish school on December 2025.
        I really want further information. Thanks!

        2. You will need to finish high school by the time the IMAT starts, since medical school in Italy will start soon after (usually close to a month or so after the IMAT).

    1. To register for the IMAT test itself it is not necessary to have the DoV ready, but you will need it at other stages (such as during enrolment).

    1. Yes pre enrollment has started. The deadlines are university specific, so you should contact your university and ask what deadlines they have. You will need to do this step if you are a non-EU candidate

    I’m an EU candidate, I’ve already register for Universitaly. Can you help me please, with some navigational advices, what documents should I attach for IMAT exam, like do I need to translate officially my high school certificate? After IMAT registration I also have to register for the specific universities, or the IMAT registration includes the registration for the universities? Thank you for your response in advance!

  9. The IMAT registration itself does not require you to have your high school documents translated to italian, but this will be required later when you enroll to your university. You will make your selection of Universities when you apply for the IMAT, but be aware that some universities require you also to register on their websites.

    I’m applying this year but haven’t got an apostille and DoV yet, so I haven’t completed Universitaly registration.

  18. Dear Sir/Madam,
    I have the ambition to study medicine in Italy. However, the fact that the IMAT cannot be taken online is unfairly excluding most potential applicants. There are just a few centres available globally where the test can be taken and this technically has prevented a lot more applicants. I feel there is the need to establish test centres in every country or run the test online to give opportunity to all and sundry.

      I can understand your point of view. It can be difficult for some applicants to secure visas to take the test outside their home country, which as you said does create a degree of unfairness. However, running the test in every country would not be feasible, and running the test online would create a lot of possibility for cheating. This also would not be fair. I think given the circumstances the IMAT is quite fair now, it would of course be great if more test centers could open around the world. We will have to see how the future looks.

  20. Hello! Most universities replied to me that I am a nonEU student, however 2 of them said that I am EU (because I have a EU permanent residency permit card). How do I register for IMAT both as an EU student for some universities and a nonEU person for others? Many Thanks.

    1. There has never been a specific section for data analysis, but in the logical reasoning and problem solving section there has often been a question where you analyse data, for instance in a table.
